spelmanOne of CDU’s founding fathers, Dr. Mitchell Spellman was a leader in advocating for civil rights and promoting the connection between patient care, medical education, and research.

After studying at Dillard University, a historically black institution, he went on to medical school at Howard University, where he studied under Charles Drew. Upon the formation of CDU, Spellman was asked to be the founding and executive dean of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School. He ensured our University was one that served the community in every aspect of our work and could be a model for other institutions. After his tenure, he went on to be a faculty member and dean at Harvard. Spellman has received honorary doctoral degrees from three universities and numerous awards including the Dillard University Distinguished Alumnus Award, the William A Sinkler Award of the National Medical Association, and a creative award from the Charles R. Drew Medical School Foundation.
